Description
A gluten-free apple crisp with almond flour featuring a golden, buttery topping and a tender, sweet-tart apple filling. Easy to make in one bowl with simple pantry staples.
Ingredients
- 6 cups peeled and sliced apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
- 1 ½ cups almond flour
- ½ cup old-fashioned oats (certified gluten-free)
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup cold butter or coconut oil
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
Instructions
1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×9 baking dish.
2. Make the Filling: In a bowl, toss apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 2 tbsp brown sugar. Spread them in the prepared dish.
3. Mix the Topping: In another bowl, combine almond flour, oats, remaining brown sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples.
4. Bake and Cool: Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and bubbly. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith. Keep butter cold for a crisp topping. Don’t overmix; a few lumps are fine.
Let it rest after baking to thicken juices. Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in a 300°F oven for 10 minutes or microwave for 30 seconds. Serve with vanilla ice cream, Greek yogurt, caramel drizzle, or coffee/tea.
For variations: swap oats for more almond flour (grain-free), use coconut oil for vegan, add chopped pecans or walnuts, or try pears or mixed berries. Can be made ahead: assemble, cover, refrigerate overnight, then bake fresh. Almond meal can substitute for almond flour.
Frozen apples work; thaw and drain first. Done when topping is golden and juices bubble. Makes 8 servings.
