Description
This white amish bread recipe yields a loaf that’s wonderfully soft with a tender crumb. It’s my go-to for sandwiches and toast.
Ingredients
2 cups Warm water (110°F)
2 1/4 teaspoons Active dry yeast
1/2 cup White sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons Salt
1/4 cup Vegetable oil
6 to 6 1/2 cups All-purpose flour
Instructions
- Dissolve yeast and a pinch of sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy
- Stir in remaining sugar, salt, and oil
- Gradually add flour, one cup at a time. Mix well after each additio
- Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic
- Place dough in a greased bowl. Cover it with a clean towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour

- Place loaves into greased 9×5 inch pans. Cover and let rise for 45 minutes
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake loaves for 30-35 minutes
- Brush tops with melted butter immediately
Notes
Use a thermometer for water temperature; yeast dies in hot water.
Knead until the dough passes the windowpane test.
Let dough rise in a slightly warm oven.
Cover dough with plastic wrap to prevent a skin.
Check doneness with an instant-read thermometer; internal temperature should reach 190°F.
Cool bread completely before slicing.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.
Freeze loaves for up to 3 months; wrap tightly in plastic wrap and foil.
Reheat slices in a toaster or refresh a whole loaf in a 300°F oven for 10 minutes.
